What is satellite TV and who offers it in the UK?

What is satellite TV and who offers it in the UK?

Analogue TV with its five channels and it limited areas of coverage is gradually slipping into the past and by 2012 every area of the UK will be served only by some form of digital broadcasting or another.

One of the most common ways of receiving a digital TV service is via satellite, and has been for many years.

But which companies offer satellite TV in the UK and what are the key differences between the providers?

The main provider of satellite TV in the UK is Sky, who have had a monopoly on the market for nearly two decades, and this is perhaps a testament to the quality of their service, or perhaps to the power of the larger corporations that own it.

They offer subscription based satellite TV in various different price ranges, from the standard Sky Box with an adjustable amount of content and channels right up to Sky Plus HD which offers HD channels as well as the chance to record, pause and rewind live TV, all of which fall under monthly price plans.

Recently the BBC and ITV have jointly started a free to air satellite TV service called Freesat, which offers a range of free channels provided via satellite, as well as the opportunity to watch HD content if you buy the correct box, all with no monthly fee.

All satellite services in the UK require the installation of a satellite dish on the outside of your property so that the signal can be beamed between your TV and the orbiting satellite, but because it is such a flexible medium there is coverage in virtually every area of the country.
